Behind the bar at Micky’s

As freshman new to Iowa City, walking just one street away from campus opens doors to discovering the popular hangouts of Iowa City.  While wandering around the downtown area, we came across an Irish pub owned by a University of Iowa graduate.  This historic restaurant, Micky’s Irish Pub, possesses a relaxed yet conversation-friendly environment evident when you first open the door.

As we entered the restaurant, we were warmly greeted by both the bartender and hostess.  We were offered seats and menus while we observed the patrons and decor of the restaurant.  The black tin ceiling decorated with antique chandeliers gives the dining area an eclectic feel.  Three-quarters wood paneling decorates the walls along with varied artwork and posters creates a dark, cozy meeting place.  TVs are located on several walls broadcasting sporting events and newscasts, making it easy to keep up with the latest scores and events.  Soft rock plays in the background and makes it easy to talk.  The constant hum of conversation and music highlight the popularity of Micky’s among Iowa Citians and visitors alike.  As we spoke to the manager, Adam, we were informed that the pub is frequented by professors, business people, and UI graduates but attracts undergrads and locals as well.  He snickered as he added, “The only thing [I] know, is if it is a football Saturday, [I] better have…20 gallons of Bloody Mary mix.”  Adam mentioned Micky’s is a typical college bar at night but a comfortable place to study during the day.

The “Walk of Shame” breakfast burrito is actually a real thing.  Someone thought this was a good idea, and unfortunately we think they’re right.  Eggs, bacon, sausage, cheese, salsa, and guacamole are just a few of the ingredients packed into this giant heart-attack of a burrito.

As we soon discovered, the bar itself has a unique history;  It was built in St. Louis, MO, in 1870 but due to Prohibition, the bar was kept in storage until 1934.  It was later moved to Donnelly’s Irish Pub in Iowa City.  After Donnelly’s closed for a time, the bar passed through several owners’ hands before it settled in Micky’s Irish Pub in 1980.  The bar has been part of Micky’s for over thirty years and after it’s restoration, it continues to draw attention to the popular restaurant.

Over two years ago, the entire restaurant was gutted and redone.  New staff were trained to work at the updated pub.  Norah, a staff member we spoke to, told us she became interested in working at Micky’s through a friend’s great experience.

While speaking with first-time customers who had moved their daughter into the University, we asked their impressions of their dining experience.  They both agreed it was a welcoming environment and the food was “wonderful”.  Due to move-in week at the University, Micky’s was especially busy.  The waitstaff was attentive to customers’ needs and offered our interviewees a free wine in apology of the slower service.  The customers we spoke to said they would recommend dining there and would enjoy coming again.

Micky’s offers a variety of places to sit whether it is at the bar, a regular table or right next to the street on the patio.  No matter the location of the table though, the service received is attentive and friendly.

Micky’s Irish Pub continues to attract new customers as well as long-time patrons.  The regulars are known by name and continue to enjoy the all-American menu that includes breakfast, lunch, and dinner.  The reasonable prices give college students the opportunity to have a good meal without emptying their wallet.  The atmosphere provides a comfortable place to meet friends, study, and enjoy a good meal.  And of course, once you reach the age of 21, enjoy the bar aspect of it! 😉
