Pitaya (115 S. Dubuque Street)

If you find yourself walking around the Iowa City Ped Mall, a little clothing shop called Pitaya might be worth a visit. Pitaya arrived in Iowa City just four years ago in 2018 and currently has sixteen locations around the U.S.  While some shops around Iowa City had to close down because of the Covid-19 pandemic (like the Silver Spider and Union Bar), Iowa City’s Pitaya gained more traffic than ever before. Their website’s description reads “Our first store opened in 1990 in Bloomington, Indiana. We stock our racks with fresh merchandise every week, always offer great prices, and all Pitaya label clothes are sewn right here in the USA!!!”

Light and flowy dresses, skirts, and tops just inside the store’s entrance are perfect for a summer day.

The store caters to young adults through both trendy products and low prices. Named after a colorful cactus fruit, Pitaya specializes in “athleisure” wear and colorful, comfortable clothing. Their most popular products are their sunglasses, jewelry, and sleeveless tops. Most of these tops range from $20-$30 and most bottoms are under $60. Their sunglasses are high-end but offered at affordable prices! The store’s audience targets university students who are interested in buying cute, trendy, feminine clothes for a night out or a walk around the town.

Just beyond the bright colorful entrance, Patiya showcases a large display of clothes essential for a night out on the town.

While the store offers lavish clothes for many occasions, don’t miss their stylish sunglasses and jewelry available in all sizes. The store is clean and easy to navigate. You are drawn in physically by the modern tunes playing through the speakers, cute add ons in the windows, and the engaging employee eager to help make your experience as great as possible. If you enjoy shopping at Garage or Altar’d State this small branch of accessories is right for you!

Finish off your outfit with a number of different necklaces, earrings, bracelets, and bags Patiya has to offer.

Being a small business has its challenges, however. Though it offers a wide variety of colors, Pitaya size selection leaves much to be desired. In part, this is addressed by providing fitting rooms in-store. Online reviews also reveal that though their products are trendy and affordable, their quality might be lower than expected. Each customer may need to prioritize what they look for when shopping for clothing at this store.

If you have questions about the store, you can follow this link to their website. Unfortunately, starting August 31st they will be renovating the website so they will only have in person shopping until the renovation is complete. While online shopping offers a variety of sizes, there’s more products in store that are easily available to the customers. Their hours are 10am-9pm from Monday to Saturday, and 11am-7pm on Sundays. Feel free to walk in anytime during their opening hours to interact with the friendly employees about current and upcoming fashion.

Sunglasses of every color and style greet you as you enter the boutique.
